From here they jump in to the studio the day after the comp (so today!) and the prize galore just keeps on coming.
Also, another congrats goes out to Miles McDougall for his musical project Pikachunes winning the Best Demo competition for his track 'Fire'. He's off to Auckland to spend some time in the Red Bull studios with well-known producer, Recloose. Not to mention a years supply of Red Bull- no excuses for being tired now Miles! :P
Its been an amazing comp this year, it was great to meet you all and we'll see you again soon no doubt. (Do come and say hello if you see me around :D)
And check out the vids from the finals night on the RDU You Tube channel! Doooo it!

Heats weekend
It was awesome to be able to meet some of you guys and to see what amazing talent Christchurch has. Even if you don't make it through to the next round i encourage you to keep writing, practicing and gigging- i was blown away by many of you.
So to all the bands that competed- THANK YOU SO MUCH. I'm going to keep an eye out for many of you, don't be phased by the random brown girl dancing up the front to your set :D
And a MASSIVE thanks to the Dux for looking after us so well, plus Marcus and the Mainz crew for all their hardwork.
Until tomorrow...

Gear list & Best Demo Comp
Tech specs are as follows:
Mapex 5 piece kit with hi-hat stand and two cymbal stands and 1 throne.
SWR Bass amp and 4x10 cab
Marshall MGX 100 guitar head + quad box
Fender FM212 guitar combo
Feel free to bring extra gear if you like...e.g: extra cymbals/stands, your own bass/guitar head etc. Just keep in mind you've only been allocated 15mins. This is very important!
And don't forget...We are still taking in Best Demo entries. One person can enter 3 tracks under different projects: e.g- John can enter a track for Groovy Monkeys (his band), Russian Cyclists (his duo) and Flying Low (his solo project)- it's not 3 tracks for one person/producer, does get a tad confusing!
You can hand in your entries to me at the heats if you dont get the postage thing in on time. You have all day Sat and Sun to see me!
Also- just so you know...the judges are looking for the following things:
-Musicianship: Technical ability, prep/tuning of equipment, onstage volume & dynamics, recovery from string breakage etc
-Originality: Composition, fresh ideas & good tunes
-Presence: Communication with the audience, impact, overall good show
-The Song: Overall impression of the song
-X-Factor: Pizazz, attention grabbing
Any questions about gear etc, just give me a holla :D

Interview with RounDUp 2008 winner, Von Klap
I spoke to them a while back and here's what they had to say...
1) Its been a year since your win at the 2008 RoundUp competition, whats been happening since?
Since the last time you heard from "Von" Klap Bobby has had two more children and Sam has had a haircut. The band has just finished recording 14 tracks for their debut album, "Dog". There have been new videos for the songs "Dying" and "Water and Wine". Of course, who could forget when RDU, in association with Gorilla Pictures, Hells Pizza, "The Swank" artists of hair, The Sitting Room, Tandem Voice Booth, Embassy, The Rockshop, Goodbye Blue Monday and Schwartzkopf brung you a video about "Not Getting Younger".
The band started letting off progressively larger and larger and then massive party poppers, sometimes projecting confetti up to 25 Metres according to the packaging. This created such a good vibe and everybody enjoyed themselves so much that nobody even noticed the smoke machine anymore.
David Bain was found innocent in his retrial and old cut stab-dogg was sentenced for murder. MJ died and the band watched "Shoah" another couple of times. Damien went to Thailand with his stepdad and little brother. Tim Moore rocked out at ChartFest to a crowd which swelled to at least 12-15 people, who apparently "felt uncomfortable". Nathan Haines closed for the band at SounDay and afterwards said that he felt "it was an honour". Matty X can see again thanks to the optometrists at Northlands Mall and Rayban.
Bobby had a motorcycle accident, and Chicken Pox. Sam quit the band after a performance-related-fiasco but was allowed to re-enter due to the low standard of applicants for the position of drummer.
The band went from strength to strength and changed their name to "Von Klap". Universal acclaim soon followed. The number of dogs in Christchurch increased from around 300 to 320. The tenth anniversary of Darcy Clay's death passed, and everybody tipped some booze on the carpet at practice to commemorate this. Von Klap travelled to majestic Onekaka's The Mussell Inn and had a swell time. The band remains desperate for any endorsement and/or sponsorship. They can be contacted on 021 353 759.
Currently the band are mixing the album, "Dog", and planning a new video which will "tackle the youth binge-drinking culture in Christchurch", thanks to Creative Communities, Christchurch City Council and Goodbye Blue Monday.
There have been many more dogs in the south island than Von Klap can remember, and the band hopes to honour the memory of all these lost dogs and celebrate the dogs of today with their forthcoming album "Dog".
2) Phew. Good effort. I need to rest for bit! But anyways, Last year you entered under the name 'The Klap', why the name change?
"Von Klap" are a band that used to be called "The Klap" until they realised "the" is totally passe and "von" is totes. Also, there are about 14 other bands around called "The Klap".
3) Haha. What are you plans for the future now that the win has kick-started your career somewhat.
"Von" Klap will continue to be more totes.
somewhat
cheers rdu
4) I see one of you (Tim) also has a solo project...any chance you'll be entering this year as a solo artist? Or any other boys in other musical projects?
No. "Bois Torlut" are considering entering but only Sam and Matty X are in it. Tim sucks
5) I'll keep that in mind :P...And lastly...any advice for this year's competitors?
Dont bother, unless you're The Unfaithful Ways.
But if you must ignore our first advice,
stageshow stageshow stageshow.

Entry forms and other things.
And introducing a new feature of the competition: Best Demo! Info is below and you can also download the entry forms for this above (good exercise for the eyes, this looking up and down thing :D)
If you are planning on entering and have a music My Space page, do make sure to add this to your 'Upcoming Shows' section. Even though you may only play one song throughout the whole competition, having your friends, fans and support crew there will totally make the playing easier and lessen the feeling of 'ooh...competition' lol. We also have an event page on Facebook- do check it out! http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1253222183&v=feed&story_fbid=241789935494#/event.php?eid=105535079454 This is another good way of spreading the word about your gig, especially to your friends who aren't, cant work or dont know about My Space :D
Next time you hear from me, you actually wont hahaha.
An interview with Von Klap (formerly The Klap) up next :D

A chunk more information...
WHO WILL CONQUER THE BEAST THIS YEAR?
The Christchurch live music scene is thriving, with over 500 bands currently listed on the CHART (christchurchmusic.org.nz) website. RoundUp is a tangible example of RDU’s commitment to developing locally produced, original music and sharing it with the wider New Zealand music industry. RDU is stoked to be collaborating with Christchurch’s key music industry partners to provide the winning band with the opportunity to get their career as a band rolling.
RounDUp 2008 showed just how necessary a competition like this is with over 50 original bands entering. Enter at the Dux de Lux, Hunters and Collectors or via www.rdu.org.nz
BEST DEMO:
RDU is pleased to announce a new competition for 2009 to showcase the best produced track or song. Entries will be judged on the overall sound quality and production values and will give consideration to composition. The winner must be part of the production, but is not limited to playing a single role ie: composer and engineer. Best Demo is NOT genre specific and proudly presented by Redbull for 2009.
VENUE:
The Dux de Lux winner of the New Zealand Bar of the Year Award for 2006 and 2008, has long been and is still, Christchurch’s leading showcase for contemporary New Zealand music featuring a weekly line up of new music every week.
